Contained metal

Turn the tonnes and grade in a resource estimate into contained ounces or pounds, with each category kept apart.

Example numbers are loaded. Replace them with figures from the company's own filings.
Metal
Measured and Indicated
599,611 troy oz
16.00 Mt at 1.17 g/t
Inferred, kept separate
290,160 troy oz
9.50 Mt at 0.95 g/t
Measured
182,295 troy oz
Indicated
417,317 troy oz
Inferred is not added to Measured and Indicated. Contained metal is metal in the ground, not what can be mined or recovered. Mineral resources that are not mineral reserves do not have demonstrated economic viability.

How it works

A resource estimate lists tonnes and grade for each category. Contained metal is tonnes times grade, converted to troy ounces for gold and silver or to pounds for base metals.

Measured and Indicated can be added together. Inferred is kept apart: it carries the least confidence, and NI 43-101 does not allow it to be added to the other categories.

Contained metal is metal in the ground. It does not say how much can be mined or recovered, or whether doing so would pay. That is what the economic studies are for. Mineral resources that are not mineral reserves do not have demonstrated economic viability.
